A new initiative to support martial arts restaurants in Miami will give one restaurant the opportunity to work without rent for up to a year in a new collaborative outdoor project Space Park in the Small Town Innovation District at the Magic City.
The “One Little Step” initiative is part of a plan to address the impact of COVID on restaurants in Miami. It’s a particularly exciting opportunity for Miami restaurant concepts, which will find a community to support the presentation of their brand.
All restaurants operating within the city limits of Miami can apply for a six-month contract to work in Space Park without renting. Applications are available at Space Park website and will be accepted by March 12.
The space park, located at 298 NE 61st St., was created as a new way to experience live music amid the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through cooperation between the owners of the Club Space nightclub in the city center and the mix company Bar Lab, with the support of Live Nation, the park aims to enrich rich experiences by focusing on cuisine, mixology, live music and fitness.
When the opportunity arose to lease much of the country, the founders of Bar Laba, Elad Zvi and Gabe Orta, teamed up with space founders David Sinopoli, Colom Kaboomsky and Davide Danese, teaming up to create the Space Park. Once the limits of the pandemic are eased, the open space – which is officially open on New Year’s Eve – can accommodate up to 6,000 people.
The “One Little Step” came about because the co-founders of the Space Park sent inquiries from a number of failed institutions in Miami.
“There came a point when we were offered one or two jobs a week. People were saying, ‘Hey, come take a look at this restaurant or visit this space.’ “And from there, we decided that the best move was to bring out our efforts outdoors and use the Space Park not only as a space but as a real shared park,” Sinopoli says.
When the application process is complete, the group will select one grant recipient for one small step. Along with a temporary lease base without renting, the opportunity will also include what Kaboomsky calls “intimate marketing and business mentoring” from Space Park-led companies. Help will range from marketing and promotion to helping the Bar Lab team create a beverage program.
“A lot of times restaurants don’t have that expertise to execute programming, marketing, or advertising at a professional level,” Kaboomsky explains. “As a restaurant serving at one of our music events, it will have access to all the elements we use to promote our events.”
Moving forward, Space Park wants to offer a variety of outdoor activities and weekly programming, from free weekly yoga classes and live music shows to pop events. When fully operational, the park will be open Thursday through Sunday, and vendors (including the winner of the One Small Step) will be available with food and beverage options on sale.
Sinopoli says supporting the community has always been at the forefront for him and his partners. They understand that independent restaurants and small businesses are the lifeblood of the local economy.
“We hope this is one small step – intended for puns – to help someone in the community get back on their feet. As leaders of the Miami hospitality community, we feel the best way to bless the park is by paying in advance,” he explains. . “So many people have had a challenging year. We have a lot of space here and the opportunity to be compassionate people. We hope to use this space as a real incubator for people who need extra support.”
